Opening Celebrations

In China, often, when new businesses open, even if it's a small one-room real estate company, there will be many (10 to 20?) wreathes of flowers on tripod stands outside the new business.  In the U.S., you would see such a display, only at a funeral.  I do not know if the intention is to make us all believe that their friends sent them to wish them well on the new venture.  Since all of the floral arrangements are the same, I am not fooled.  I suppose that it is an effort at marketing.  It says, "hey, look here," in which case, it is better than some people do who start little businesses, in the neighborhood.  Some people think that by opening their doors, and nothing more, they will get heaps of business, instantaneously.  In general, marketing and marketing techniques are not well-know, here, in country: China

By the way, the more elaborate celebrations also involve a bunch of drum and cymbal players to attract even more attention, aurally, in addition to visually.  For example, I knew that someone was finally going to finish the three three-story apartment towers across the way from us when I heard the drum and cymbal band, a few months back.  The three high-rises had sat as unfinished skeletons for about the last ten years.  Now, work is progressing on all three.  I just hope that the person, who has acquired them, bought them at a deep discount, as the real estate market has been down for the past half year, and there was an overhang of several hundred thousand unsold new units at the end of 2008, in Guangzhou.
